•  1866: H. G. Wells, author of The Invisible Man was born.
•  1941: Fannie Flagg, who authored Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe was born in Birmingham Alabama.
•  1947: Stephen King, who authored The Green Mile, was born.
•  Ralph Bunche, was the first African American to win the Nobel Peace Prize. He won in 1950 in the Peace category.
•  1957 U.S.A. The Little Rock Nine were slipped into Little Rock Central High School, a riot insued & they were temporarily removed from the school.
•  1896: F. Scott Fitzgerald, who authored The Great Gatsby was born.
•  1999: Marion Zimmer Bradley , the author of The Mists of Avalon, dies.
•  1962: James Meredeth tried for the third time to register for classes at the University of Mississippi but was turned away by Governor Paul Johnson.
•  1917: Louis Auchincloss, the author of The Scarlett Letter was born.
